What we call the Heart of Virginia Bike Festival now has changed over the years. In the ’80s it started as a Century ride (September is the League of American Bicyclists’ National Century Month) when riders pooled a few dollars so their friends or families could set up a rest stop or two along the route of the ride. Later it changed so that the proceeds of the event would help fund some of the club’s operations.
The event now primarily supports charitable activities. In 2014 all of the net proceeds went to RABA’s (and its RABA Foundation’s)“Bikes for Kids” program and BIAV (the Brain Injury Association of Virginia).
